13 Places To Put Toilet Paper In A Bathroom

Toilet papers

Have you ever reached for a roll of toilet paper while in the bathroom, only to find there aren’t any nearby? Or do you find that you don’t have enough storage space for your rolls? The importance of having a place to keep your toilet paper cannot be overlooked.

Here are the 13 clever ways to place a toilet paper holder in a bathroom:

1. A bathroom rolling cart

One of the most convenient freestanding toilet paper holders is a rolling cart. You can use your cart to store toilet rolls, towels, and toiletries, and since it is mobile, you can move it around whenever you need to! Go for a white/off-white cart for a modern, sleek look. However, if you want to add a pop of color to your bathroom, a bright color that matches your decor can make a huge difference. If you’re going to make your bathroom more welcoming, adding a small vase with a couple of flowers can effectively help you achieve this.

Mounted wire baskets are easy to use and have an appealing rustic appearance; plus, you can easily install them over your toilet or on a nearby wall. Once you have all your toiletries in place, you can fill the remaining baskets with small plants and decorative towels.

There’s nothing better than taking something you already own and using it for a completely different purpose. Consider adding a magazine holder beside your toilet – if you have one that is wide enough, you can put several toilet paper rolls inside it. You can set the repurposed magazine holder on the floor or the countertop depending on your preference. This is a nifty idea to help keep everything in your bathroom tidy. The traditional triangular design of magazine holders creates a unique angle that blends well when placed in the bathroom corner.

Do you enjoy crafts or DIY projects? If so, you’ll enjoy making your own toilet paper holder by sewing fabric that can be suspended from a wall. You can use any material you want, as long as it’s durable and strong enough to hold one or more toilet rolls. Depending on the design of fabric you go for, you could pull off a masculine look, a feminine look, or even a fun, youthful look for your little one’s bathroom. Bright patterns are ideal for adding a bit of flair to the space, while smooth, plain colors will easily blend into an already-designed bathroom.

5. A repurposed crate

Install an old wooden crate in your bathroom for a rustic feel. A plain crate made from reclaimed wood is a good place to start, but if you want to take things a notch higher, look for a design that features an old license plate, maps, or stickers for a travel theme. This will add a classy vintage look to the space, and when you add your toilet rolls to this holder, they will strikingly pop out against the dark wooden background.

Alternatively, you can stack several crates together to create an instant storage unit in your bathroom. These DIY toilet paper holders can also be used to store towels and any other personal items you may have in your bathroom. For a simple, clean aesthetic, you can paint the crates white. These crates can go on the floor or up on a wall, and the tops of your crates can be used as extra shelving.

6. A tall hurricane vase

You can make this freestanding toilet paper holder even nicer by adding unique decorative touches like flowers or multicolored stones. Depending on how tall your hurricane vase is, you can place it on the floor or a nearby counter.

Don’t worry about them sticking out like a sore thumb – use a bit of wrapping paper and ribbons to decorate them so that they blend in with your bathroom’s design. Types of toilet paper holders

Before getting into the numerous clever ways to place a toilet paper holder in your bathroom, it’s essential to be aware of the different types of toilet paper holders available. They can be divided into the following broad categories:

1. Mounted toilet paper holders

This is the most popular type of toilet paper holder. You can usually screw-mounted holders to the side of a bathroom cabinet or, in some cases, the wall or bathtub depending on the type of setup you have in your bathroom.

2. Freestanding toilet paper holders

A great alternative to mounted holders is freestanding toilet paper holders. Unlike the mounted holders, most of these varieties aren’t stationary, so that you can move them from one spot to another in your bathroom.

3. Unconventional toilet paper holders

There are many non-traditional toilet paper holders, ranging from over the toilet space-saving racks to decorative baskets. They can be essentially anything that can securely hold one or more toilet papers in your bathroom.

How to install a mounted toilet paper holder

Follow the steps below to securely install a mounted toilet paper holder in your bathroom:

1. Determine the location

Finding the most appropriate location to mount your toilet paper holder can be the most challenging part of the job. Keep in mind that each bathroom is different, so you may have to make slight adjustments depending on your unique situation. It might be helpful to experiment with a handful of locations before beginning the drilling process.

Guidelines for mounting

Both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) have provisions for the standard placement of a wall-mounted toilet paper holder. The NKBA recommends installing your toilet paper holder 8-12 inches away from the toilet (measurements from the front of the toilet)  and 26 inches above the floor. This should give you enough space to reach out for the toilet paper without it being too far so that you aren’t stretching out too far. On the other hand, the ADA requires users to install toilet paper dispensers on the nearest side wall, a maximum of 36 inches from the rear wall and a minimum of 19 inches above the floor.

While the aforementioned guidelines are useful, there are a couple of options you might want to keep in mind:

  • In most cases, it’s ideal for mounting your toilet paper dispenser on the wall across from the toilet if you have a small bathroom. That way, you’ll be able to grab the toilet roll without inadvertently hitting your arm or getting cramped up.
  • If the first option is unsuitable, consider mounting the toilet paper holder on your sink cabinet (if you have one beside your toilet). The toilet paper won’t be too far away from you.
  • Another option is to look for a self-adhesive toilet paper holder which you can easily mount to the side of your bathtub or any other hard surface.

2. Collect your tools

Here are the tools you will need to mount your toilet paper dispenser:

  • Power drill with several drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Bubble level
  • Masking tape
  • Hammer (if you’re using drywall anchors)
  • Stud finder (optional)
  • Screws

3. Prepare your supplies

Before starting the project, try dry-fitting the pieces to see if they align. That way, the drilling process will be much faster. You’ll also want to ensure that your toolkit comes with a paper mounting template to assist with drilling the holes.

4. Tape the template to the bathroom wall

After determining a suitable location, tape the mounting template to the wall using masking or painter’s tape. To get a better idea of what the toilet paper holder will look like, try holding it up against the template.

5. Level your template

To check if the mounting template is level, place a bubble level along its top edge. Make any adjustments necessary by loosening the tape and carefully re-leveling the template.

6. Find studs in the wall

If you plan to drill into studs, use a stud finder beforehand. Move the tool steadily along the wall and note any studs you come across. If any holes are drilled into a stud, you won’t need drywall anchors. Some individuals may even prefer having a minimum of one set of mounting holes going into a study to provide more stability. If you don’t have a stud finding tool, try gently tapping on the wall to locate the studs.

7. Drill the pilot holes

After aligning the mounting template properly, start drilling the pilot hole. Make a point of using the appropriate drill bit size to make the drilling process easier. After all the pilot holes have been drilled (most mounting systems typically require four holes), remove the template.

8. Install the mounting brackets

Carefully tap the drywall anchors into the screw holes using a hammer. You’ll only need the anchors if the pilot holes don’t go into a stud. Use your screws to securely install the mounting brackets on the wall. Next, place the holder on the brackets, then secure it by tightening the lock screws. If properly fixed, the holder should sit flush against the wall.

9. Make sure everything is in place

To check if the toilet paper is securely attached to the wall, pull on it gently – if it moves, go back and confirm all the screws are fully tightened. Drilling holes in the drywall can make your bathroom dusty, so be sure to vacuum the room as soon as possible.

Final thoughts

Having toilet paper handy is essential, yet it can be challenging to keep extra rolls nearby, especially if you have a small bathroom. These suggestions for placing a toilet holder in the bathroom can help you vastly improve the organization of this oft-tiny space without compromising the layout.
